How Much Time Should You Spend Promoting?

How much time should you pour into posting links in various social networks? Is it really worth the time and effort? I'm not talking about autopost. Autopost is wonderful but only covers WordPress, Facebook, and Twitter. And what about those days when you don't write? Is it worth setting links up in Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and the zillion other social networking sites so you can get clicks on your off days? And watch out! If you constantly post links, then you might be in danger of spamming.

These are all very tough questions and everyone has their own opinion about this. I can get extra page views by retweeting and reposting links to content that hasn't been posted in awhile but personally, I don't think that the payoff is worth a half hour of my time setting up links. And how many social networks are too many?

I've been thinking about this topic for quite some time now and it just so happens that I came across this article by Lyn Lomasi yesterday while searching for answers to these questions.

But really, if you're spending more time posting links then you are writing, that's not a good sign. If you're still not pulling in the page views after posting all those links then it can be frustrating, I know. Time to rethink the topics you are writing on.

But take a look at the article above and find your own balance.

  1. I am new to Associated Content and I have 8 articles published so far. I have been trying to figure out how I can get more page views. So far the estimated number of views is 636 but I do not know how accurate that is. So I have been posting links everywhere (not in huge numbers of course so they wont think I'm spamming)and I have not seen a HUGE difference in page views but I have gotten a bit more than before. For some reason, people just do not click on those links and I cannot figure out why. I tend to write about "evergreen" topics that seem to do better as the days pass but I guess I need to find hot topics to write about. Anyway, very good blog post!

  2. Pamela- You raise some excellent points. The thing about promoting is that when it works, it REALLY works so I do spend some time doing it. I try to spend one day where I don't write any articles and use that day to catch up on reading other people's work (which I consider vital for learning) and a bit of time promoting.

Successful promotions have brought in well over 8000 page views - or more - overnight. However, that is not the norm.

I am ambivalent about it. Don't do the promotion and miss those views? Or spend some time on promoting and hope that there are some huge PV hits in there, ones that translate into more exposure on Google as well.
